International Artist Residency in China

E-M Space invites art creators worldwide to apply for our residency program located in Guangdong Province, within China’s vibrant Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Situated close to Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the residency offers convenient access to major cultural hubs and manufacturing centers—ideal for creators interested in exploring the unique cultural and industrial dynamics of the region through cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Residency Space:

The total area is approximately 75 sqm, including:

Space 1: Accommodation and flexible exhibition area

Space 2: Dedicated exhibition room

Space 3: Bathroom and shower

Space 4: Kitchen

Space 5: Balcony

Space 6: Not currently open for use

 

Located just 25 minutes from the sea, the residency also offers convenient access to Shenzhen’s Pingshan Art Museum via bus and metro. Huizhou Huiyang High-Speed Railway Station is nearby, with trains to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station in about 90 minutes.

 

Situated in the greater Bay Area, the location offers proximity to regional manufacturing hubs, with access to a broad supply chain network. It’s well-suited for artists and designers interested in exploring the intersection of creative practice and manufacturing—whether in product design, electronic interaction, fashion making, or other forms of applied art.

Residency Focus & Themes

We welcome applicants interested in exploring interdisciplinary practices that engage with China’s unique commercial and cultural landscape. Suggested themes include but are not limited to:

 

1. Urban Villages and City Wandering: Everyday Life in China’s Hidden Spaces

 

2. China’s Influencer Economy: How Fame, Desire, and Selling Collide Online

 

3. Intimacy Online: How We Build Emotional Connections Through Screens

 

4, Cross-Industry Innovation: Collaboration between Art, Design, and Manufacturing — leveraging Guangdong’s manufacturing ecosystem for creative product development.

 

Applicants are encouraged to propose projects aligned with these themes or other innovative interdisciplinary ideas that reflect the residency’s mission of fostering creative-business collaborations.

Application Details

• Residency period: up to 1 month

 

• Open to international art creators interested in the China’s cultural and industrial context.

 

• Especially welcoming to creators engaged in cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural practice.

 

• This open call is ongoing and accepts applications year-round. While the residency schedule is flexible, applicants should specify their intended dates when applying, ideally with at least one and a half months in advance.

 

• Applicants are required to submit a detailed personal introduction and portfolio (preferably an online personal website or portfolio platform that does not require downloads). If available, please include a detailed plan for engaging your work with commercial contexts—through production, collaboration, or other creative interactions. For video works, links are provided for online viewing only (no downloads required).

 

• Note: We do not provide visas; visa arrangements must be handled independently by the applicant.

About E-M Space & E-M Studio

 

E-M Space is an independent cultural and creative space based in the Greater Bay Area, China, with a global perspective. Closely connected to our studio in Berlin, we support international art creators through local residencies, cultural exchange, and interdisciplinary collaboration—building sustainable links between China and Europe.

E-M Studio in Berlin focuses on exhibition curation, artistic brand development, and creative product design. We actively connect with cultural creatives based in Germany, regularly organizing workshops and exhibitions to encourage collaboration and meaningful exchange. At the same time, we support Chinese cultural creatives—especially those unable to travel to Germany—in sharing their work in Berlin, Hamburg, and beyond, fostering ongoing dialogue between creative communities in Europe and China.

 

As a young and dynamic team, we are dedicated to co-developing cultural merchandise and collaborative projects with art creators, blending art, design, fashion, publishing, and product development. Leveraging Guangdong’s powerful manufacturing ecosystem, we work closely with creators from concept to production. The region’s strategic location near Shenzhen and Hong Kong offers fast logistics and access to international markets. Our mission is to transform creative ideas into tangible cultural goods and sustainable creative-business partnerships together with the creators.
